Class Descriptions

Vocal Freedom: Embrace Your "Natural Voice"    Amy Patterson

What are 'primal sounds' and how are they connected to singing and performance? We'll experiment with a variety of vocal sounds and show how they may be used to relieve excess tension and release your natural voice.

Vocal Warmup to Empower Yourself and Others    Sue Kember

Why warm up the voice?  What is the best way to warm it up?  What are the best exercises to do when you don’t have a lot of time to warm up?  How do I build a warm up segment for my chorus?  This class will answer all these questions and more!  This will be an interactive class where you can try out the warm ups that are introduced.

The Why and How of Performance Plans    Jill Reid

Have you ever received feedback along the lines of “the message wasn’t consistent/unified”?  If so, this session is for you!  Come along and learn about the steps involved in the development and implementation of a cohesive, authentic ensemble performance plan designed to maximize members’ retention.

Embellishments - How to Use the Hidden Gems in the Written Music to Enhance Your Performance    Janet Billings

Embellishments are a hallmark of barbershop music.  Arrangers strategically place them in their songs as opportunities for musically rich performances. For both quartets and choruses, this class will explain the different types of embellishments and provide guidance on how to use them effectively.

Overtones Tuning and Timbre    David Wright

We’ve all had the thrilling experience of hearing or singing a four-part chord and, when it’s perfectly tuned, noticing those extra voices floating above: the elusive overtone. In this course, David Wright will explain and demonstrate the overtone series and discuss how the timbre of musical sounds and the tuning of chords relates to it.

Making an Exciting First Impression    Sandi Wright

What do the superstars do? How do they manage to grab an audience and have it captivated throughout a whole show. There are theatrical tricks that are common between the megastars. This class teaches performers how to be memorable from the start.

Poolside Quartet Mix 'N' Match   Dan Signor, Harmony's "First Gentleman"

Are you a quartet singer? Want to explore quartet singing? Would you like to find other quartet singers and potentially form a new quartet? Please come to this Quartet Mix 'N' Match to join the singing fun! We will use the Area 6 common song, This Is Why We Sing, to mix 'n' match all the voices present.

We'll start by reviewing Why We Sing in chorus formation (and hopefully have an opportunity to perform it together as a chorus sometime during the weekend.)

Vocal tips will be freely offered and tons of quartet singing tricks-of-the-trade will be explored. Hope to see you poolside for this supportive and educational adventure into quartet singing!

All skill and experience levels are encouraged to attend.
